Physical Safety

There are a number of physical safety issues that can arise from using ICT devices. Some of these safety issues include:

Trailing Cables

Have you ever heard about trailing cables? When cables go across the floor, there is a risk that people might trip over them. So, it is a good safety practice to keep trailing cables inside carpets or ducts. This is done to prevent accidents caused by computer cables. Because of the many cables attached to the computer, people can trip over and be injured by the cables. Such as injuries and electric shock.

Heavy equipment

If your computer is heavy, there is a risk of injury when you move it, if a heavy item falls on someone.
Devices must be placed in suitable positions. Make sure equipment is placed on tables or shelves that are strong enough for them; if it will be large enough to support the device.  Also, devices need to be placed where users can get at them easily.

Electrical Overload

If you overload the electric system too much, it could catch fire. It is dangerous if the fuses
blow or the sockets get warm. There could be scorch marks on the sockets or flickering lights
on the sockets. Check for any loose wiring if this occurs. You should be alert and aware of the
limit to prevent this.

Spilling Drinks

If a drink spills into your computer or device you could risk it being damaged. Spilling drinks on your devices can lead to death in the most extreme cases. Liquid could
damage circuits, and the keyboard, motherboard, memory, processor, and others could be
affected.

To prevent this, you could ensure all drinks are kept away from electronics.

Strategies to minimise potential safety risks:

• Frequent equipment maintenance to ensure that it meets safety regulations.
• Check the condition of cables/plugs on a regular basis to verify that nothing is exposed.
• Wireless connections are used to reduce the need for cords.
• Check under desks for any trip risks (bags, plug sockets).

With our own equipment, we should always try to exercise caution because we could harm both yourself and the equipment. We can take steps to use ICT more effectively and create a safer and healthier ICT environment.
